Phoenix Sports Photographer | Arizona State vs University of Arizona

Baseball… It is by far my favorite sport. Playing, coaching, watching…. Don’t get me wrong, I actually like all sports and have since I was 4 years old, but there is something special about baseball. It is cerebral. It seems slow to most, but an intricate minor change in strategy and execution can affect so many other areas….quite a bit like photography.

Recently, I was asked to photograph a couple of PAC12 college baseball games for our friends, Craig and Sara Maggi. We have known them for quite a while since our boys and their boys went to school together for the last 11 years. All their boys all went to St Thomas and played baseball…then they moved on to (and some still attend) Brophy College Prep…playing (of course) baseball … They have had a couple of their boys star at the best baseball school in the country for aspiring pros…Arizona State University. One of these sons, Drew, was drafted a couple years ago by the Pittsburgh Pirates and is making his way up the ladder in their minor league system. You will probably see him in the pros in a year or two. Next in line, Beau… he is currently a catcher at ASU. After Beau came Joe… To shake things up, Joe chose to go to another decent baseball school, but also ASU’s biggest rival…The University of Arizona. Joe plays first base for the Cats (being a Sun Devil myself, it is SO hard to say good things about our rival kitty cats!)…

On to the games and the photos. We thought it was too good to be true (and it was), but U of A played ASU for one game in May. Beau against Joe…brother against brother… but it turned out that it was ASU’s second catchers turn to play… Joe made the most of it anyway, going 3 for 3, but after 9 innings, the Devils ended up with a great comeback win. Got some great shots of Joe below…

A few weeks later, I went back to ASU to photograph Beau in the game against Washington. As it turned out that second chance to photograph Beau was meant to be. With Arizona State down by two runs, Beau hit his first home run as a Sun Devil… A three run shot that put ASU ahead and they never looked back. I am so glad I was there…sitting on top of ASU’s dugout to get some great shots of his first home run and some other great plays.

I hope you enjoy these as much as I enjoyed taking them.
